Design for a Better World by Don Norman

As the Lead Product Designer for the interactive digital platform accompanying Don Norman's groundbreaking book, Design for a Better World: How to Create a Meaningful, Sustainable, and Humanity-Centered Future, I collaborated directly with Don Norman—widely regarded as the "Founder of User Experience"—to create a web experience that extended the reach and impact of the book. This platform has successfully engaged a global audience of millions of designers and changemakers, amplifying the book's transformative ideas and fostering an international movement toward humanity-centered design.

Design Themes in The Book

The themes in the book explain how human behavior has led to our global crises—and how it can save us. Through the themes of meaning, sustainability, and humanity-centered design, it advocates for a shift in priorities: valuing quality of life over profit, rethinking environmental impact, and designing for all of humanity.Designing the website in parallel with the Norman's writing process was essential in ensuring the book was digestible and easy to follow.

01

Sustainability

  • Design must shift from being unintentionally destructive to intentionally constructive.

  • We must repair the damage that has already been done.

  • Sustainability is only possible if harmful activities are stopped.

02

Humanity Centered Design

  • Design should actively consider entire ecosystems of people.

  • It means designing with, not just for, the people impacted.

  • Support designs that emerge from unique lived experiences.

03

Human Behavior

  • People inherit societal beliefs and behaviors as natural and unquestionable.

  • Those who have known no other system rarely challenge it.

  • Change seems unreasonable when alternatives are unseen.

04

Meaningful

  • Change is needed in how we teach and work.

  • We must rethink the balance between work and family life.

  • Economic systems must evolve to support sustainable progress.

Crafting the right experience.

Designing a web experience that contextualized and expanded the book's principles for a digital audience, making it accessible and engaging to millions globally. The work has significantly influenced the global design community, fostering a collaborative ethos around humanity-centered design. By connecting designers worldwide and providing a platform for sharing innovations, the project has become a model for how design can address societal challenges and drive meaningful, sustainable change.
